A Beautiful Glimpse - Watercolors by Hana Tou Mei Kun
A Beautiful Glimpse・A Whisper of Beauty
A painter’s character never stays confined to the person – it drifts into the work. Hana is quiet, unhurried, and content to let things be. She has been passionate about drawing since childhood, and her touch with a brush is as soft as her speech. In watercolor, this temperament finds its perfect instrument. The medium’s transparency, its capacity for layered tones, its fluid, luminous washes – she harnesses all of it to capture on paper a kind of beauty that arrives and lingers like a passing breeze. Her paintings are that breeze, that grace; and as the painting, so the painter.
Hana is a Macao-born artist who began her watercolor practice under the mentorship of Dor Lio Hak Man, a renowned artist in Macao. Those years steeped her in the Lio watercolor tradition – shaped by both Lio Man Cheong and Lio Hak Man – and she often joined senior practitioners on sketching excursions, absorbing lessons in plein-air that steadily sharpened her craft. Later, she travelled to Taiwan to study at National Chiayi University and Ming Chuan University. Now a seasoned teacher whose students span generations, she has never stopped being a student herself. While deepening her command of watercolor, she has pushed her own boundaries, experimenting across a range of media in a sustained exploration of new creative directions – always with the aim of advocating beauty as both a way of living and a state of mind.
Hana speaks through watercolor and takes the heart as her mirror. This exhibition in “10 Fantasia” brings together more than twenty recent pieces/sets, mostly watercolor landscapes, with a handful of sketches and acrylics. Her work centres on three families of subject: landscape, florals, and Portuguese azulejos. In each, she resists the urge to overwork. Composition and restraint are her priorities, not flourish. With seemingly effortless lines and subtle, quietly sincere brushstrokes, she catches moods as they pass, insights as they surface.
Watercolor, for Hana, is her whispering of life. She may depict an overlooked corner of her own city, or chase in haste against a sunset on her trip – brush in hand, water at the ready – translating impulse into flow, anchoring feeling in tone to accomplish visual records of urban and rural vernacular charm and the quiet poetry of everyday life. Light and shadow thread through line and mass; color and accident leave their unscripted traces. Between wet and dry, amidst strokes, between cool and warm, clarity and gloom, she coaxes out the pulse of things and the gentleness of human presence. The exhibition’s title, A Beautiful Glimpse, calls to mind a line of Song verse: a soft breeze stirs the light dust, dawn lotus wafts a hidden scent. The same unhurried elegance pervades this exhibition, inviting you to step into Hana’s quietly spoken world – to let restlessness lift, to let entanglements dissolve, and to feel, in painting, a spirit set free and a heart at peace.
I have known Hana for years, as a fellow artist and as a friend. We have walked stretches of the same path, encouraged each other along it. From her, I have learned something I now carry with me: that ease comes in a light touch, and grace in a gentle breeze.

Two Decades into Watercolour Art: A Whisper of Beauty
A Whisper of Beauty – Watercolours by Hana Tou Mei Kun is more than a display of art; it is a quiet chronicle of an artistic journey.
Nearly twenty years ago, Hana first experimented with the fluid washes of watercolour during her regular practice. Even then, she had a gift for capturing on paper the play of light and the subtle impressions of daily life. I could not have foreseen how this sensitivity to beauty—and her quiet dedication to it—would not only shape her growth but also guide her path in career and life. Today, she is a devoted art teacher, nurturing the creativity of new generations and helping her students find their own artistic voice. To see this unfold has been a deep, quiet joy beyond words.
In those early years, alongside fellow artists from our shared studio, “Tanuki’s Nest”, we organised exhibitions under the spirit of “Polishing the Pencil”, encouraging one another to explore the possibilities of brush and ink. Those days of collaborative creation and passionate discussion witnessed her evolution from an earnest student into an artist with a distinct style and mature technique.
This exhibition offers a graceful reflection on her recent artistic path. Over twenty watercolour works reveal her attentive gaze on urban life and culture, as well as her affectionate record of everyday moments. Rather than striving for dramatic effect, she works with layered washes and interwoven light and shadow to capture a transient mood, offering viewers an aesthetic of calm and understated beauty, as gentle as a whispering breeze. The painting mirrors the painter: this quiet, resilient beauty is also the essence of who she is and how she teaches.
We warmly invite you to step into Hana’s exhibition and experience this “whisper of beauty”. May her works, like a soft wind, stir something within you and awaken your own resonance with the beauty in everyday life.

Hana Tou Mei Kun
Born in Macao, Hana Tou graduated with a bachlor’s degree from the Department of Visual Arts at National Chiayi University, Taiwan, and earned her master’s degree from the Department of Commercial Design at Ming Chuan University, Taiwan. She currently works as a secondary school visual arts teacher.
During her secondary school years, she studied watercolour under local Macao artist Dor Lio Hak Man, and developed a deep affinity for watercolour landscapes, sketching, and acrylic painting. Her works are largely inspired by the cityscapes of Macao, landscapes encountered during her travels, and scenes from everyday life.
Using her brush, she documents local and regional landscapes; through her pictorial language, she traces the imprints of human life; and through her artistic expression, she channels her reflections on the serene beauty of nature. She has exhibited widely in group shows, and her works are held in private collections. She hosted in 2016, “Polishing the Pencil”: Tou Mei Kun Solo Exhibition, as part of the Artist-in-Residence Programme at 10 Fantasia, Macao.
