“Superflat: julialam_art”  Exhibition is presented at Rui Cunha Gallery, co-organized by the Rui Cunha Foundation, Macau Artist Association and Macau Youth Art Association, local young artist Julia Lam’s “Superflat: julialam_art” solo exhibition is held at Rui Cunha Gallery from October 30 to November 9, 2025.

Julia Lam Tsz Kwan is a Macao artist, curator who graduated from Academy of Fine Arts of Tsinghua University in Beijing. She was introduced to watercolor by local painter Lai Ieng at her young age. Later she developed a vibrant watercolour style, creating artworks on Macao’s festivals and Macanese cuisine. In recent years, Julia has put her focus on urban and cultural development. Drawing from her personal experiences, she highlights historically significant yet often overlooked buildings in Macao. By refining the essential structures and proportions of these buildings into specific blocks and symbols, Julia creates the “Superflat” Series epitomizing her recollections and emotions about urban architecture amidst the city’s changing architectural and cultural landscape.

The ten original works shown at Rui Cunha Foundation represent a series of urban visual cultural icons such as Hotel Estoril, Red Market, Pier 16, the Old Court at Praia Grande, to name but a few. By reiterating their historical significance the artist hopes to arouse public attention to these urban landmarks, and therefore the works are named after the year in which the building was completed. This creative method of spray overlap is derived from traditional watercolor composition logic. It transforms the layering technique in watercolor into spray overlap on hand-made plates, incorporating various techniques such as cutting, dyeing, spraying, splattering, dripping, printing, brushing, stamping, and sweeping with texture embellishments, and ultimately presenting the aesthetic traces of time through layer-by-layer assembly and spraying. In this way, Julia boldly developed a new, exclusive artistic style.  This exhibition of the “Superflat” series reflects not only Julai Lam’s self-exploration in recent years, but also a summary of her artistic transformation. It also heralds a return to the essence of things in her art journey, transcending the self and opening wider horizons for the next metamorphosis.
