Please explain the exhibition title
“Gilded Blue, Searing Radiance”: “Gilded Blue” echoes the tranquil depth of blue printing, while “Searing Radiance” alludes to the resplendent traces left by scorched gold leaf.
Concept conveyed by the exhibition theme
Hu Jiawen's solo exhibition is a visual art exploration rooted in traditional meticulous figure painting, integrating experimental ink techniques, blue printing, and gold leaf burning. The artist reconstructs Eastern aesthetics from both traditional and contemporary perspectives, building a painting environment on silk and rice paper that embodies both classical significance and modern consciousness.
The delicate rendering of meticulous brushwork, the transformative quality of experimental ink, and the profound layers of blue printing are further enhanced by the intervention of burnt gold leaf—its cracks and imperfections do not signify damage, but rather imbue the figures with character and a sense of temporal texture. This “destructive creation” not only continues the aesthetic of traditional gold leaf craftsmanship but also transforms into a profound metaphor for the modern condition of existence.
The female figures in the works often exist in a space-time interwoven with reality and illusion. The experimental ink lays out a shifting space, while blue printing delineates the forms and atmospheres of objects. The light and mottling created by the burnt gold leaf suggest the remelting of emotions and the imprint of memories. Through the dialogue between the tranquil lines of meticulous brushwork and the intense metallic burns, the artist invites viewers to immerse themselves in a world where traditional and contemporary coexist, interwoven with ink, blue, and gold.
This exhibition is not only a clever fusion of four techniques but also a sincere tribute to traditional aesthetics and an innovative continuation. Hu Jiawen, with the subtle elegance of meticulous brushwork as her foundation and contemporary artistic expression as her wings, embarks on an Eastern narrative concerning time, memory, and existence.
